Adjacent to it is a cottage, not empty yet uninhabited, serving as a museum dedicated to Michael Bruce, a poet of the 1700s whose legacy imbues the place with historical significance. His works, once crafted within these walls, now echo through time, offering visitors a glimpse into the village’s rich cultural past.
The third structure, however, is where our focus intensifies—a building abandoned and used merely for storage, its glory days a distant memory. For over fifty years, it has awaited a new purpose, its potential obscured by the patina of neglect. That is, until a village resident, inspired by daily walks along The Cobbles, envisioned a future where this tired edifice could become a home. In October 2020, that vision took its first steps towards reality.
Purchasing the building marked the beginning of an arduous yet rewarding journey. Initial assessments revealed a structure in dire need of care: rough walls, a damp foundation, and floors of mere dirt and mud. The transformation required not just renovation but a reimagining of space, purpose, and life within these old walls.
The process was methodical and thorough. Staircases were removed, layouts planned, and walls repaired with bricks and cement, laying the groundwork for a home. Upstairs, efforts to improve the internal health of the walls were matched with structural enhancements, including raising the ceiling to open up the space further. Concrete laid the new ground floor, signaling a foundational shift from dereliction to habitation.
Insulation became a turning point in the project, transforming the building from a cold shell to a burgeoning home. Despite challenges, including unexpected roof repairs, the structure began to embody resilience and renewal. Stonework was repointed, and natural light was ushered in through new roof windows, illuminating the potential within.
Interior progress mirrored the external, with plasterboard installation segmenting the open space into rooms. The installation of sash windows and the external stonework’s completion marked significant milestones, visually reaffirming the building’s transition from past to present.
The narrative of transformation was punctuated by personal touches: a bespoke hardwood oak staircase replaced the precarious ascent by ladder, bathroom fittings introduced modern conveniences, and plasterboard prepared the walls for a fresh coat of paint. The choice of simple white for most rooms, accented with blue-grey in private spaces, reflected a desire for lightness and serenity.
Flooring laid the final interior touches, with hardwood oak bringing warmth and cohesion to the space. Outdoor lighting and the restoration of cobbled frontage paid homage to the lane’s heritage, connecting the newly transformed home to its historical context.
